Description: Ying "Carol" Chen is a first-year graduate student studying Social Work at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China. She is passionate about the arts and wants to put that passion into social service. Carol has participated in various music community service program and has worked with underprivileged children and old people living alone. Also, Carol conducted research into the placement of children in institutions due to incarceration of parents and has found that these children are both neglected by the government and the public. These experience encouraged Carol to consider the relationship between art and social work. She believes that art offers the way to expressive people’s feeling, strengthen their social network and empower them. Carol hopes to gain insight into the protection systems for vulnerable children in the U.S. through working with NGOs, to explore how to engage the community through art, and to promote a better systematic protection mechanism for vulnerable Chinese children.
