Description: Shunning Tan is a third year undergraduate student majoring in financial management at Sun Yat-sen University. He is enthusiastic in helping others that he dreams of working in a NGO one day to serve the community. He also has passion for exploring new things and always gives himself a try to do what he desires such as traveling to Yunnan as a voluntary worker on his own for twenty days. He used to be a president of Economy and Management Association and one of the founders of the FDT financial club. Through these experiences, he was able to develop his strong leadership and communication skills. Besides, he was also a member of voluntary teaching group where he gets to contribute in the providing the education to the children of labor workers. Not only that he likes working with people, he enjoys helping others grow and make progress in their lives. He also realized the great importance of the early education for kids, especially those who cannot get enough resources for education. What he has experienced and realized have led him to become a part of the Lingnan W.T. Chan Fellows Program at UCLA. As a current member of the program, he works at Jumpstart to promote literacy among pre-school students in low-income neighborhood. He gets to have opportunities to work with both pre-school kids and the students from UCLA. At Jumpstart, he helps with recruiting and training students to educate kids to develop their language skills. Working at Jumpstart is a meaningful job not only for him learning new skills but also for the young students from less-economically privileged families as he help them to use the available resources to develop their language skills and have an access to education.
