Description: Xinle “Cindy” Zhong is a studying Anthropology and Ethnology as a second-year undergraduate student at Sun-Yat Sen University in Guangzhou, China. Prior to applying to the W.T. Chan Fellowship, Xinle partook in a service learning course dedicated to tackling on-campus issues. Now, Xinle serves with the researching and teaching component of The Lighthouse Union, an NGO that aims to provide education to children in rural communities. These experiences prompted Xinle to consider the connection between academic research and public service. As a member of the LGBTQ community on campus, Xinle has come to value opportunities to apply academic knowledge to public service as key to creating practical, effective change. Ultimately, it is Xinle’s dream to work for an NGO and through that to raise civic consciousness and promote social development by encouraging open thinking, critical reflection, and public practice. Xinle hopes to spend time in the United States as an intern for an NGO.  Fellowship Placement: API Equality Northern California
