Year: 2016
US Campus Assignment: UC Berkeley
University: Lingnan University, Hong Kong
Description: Chen “Jack” Chen is a second-year undergraduate student studying Business Administration at Lingan University in Hong Kong. He applied to the W.T. Chan Fellowship because it, unlike many student exchange programs, makes it possible for students to prioritize service learning abroad.
He has internalized the motto of Lingan University, “Education for Service,” and considers consistency and persistence fundamental parts of the service learning experience. He has sought out ways to apply his academic experience to public service, and considers the results extremely rewarding (such as when he improved crowd flow at the Made In Hong Kong: Our City, Our Stories exhibit organized by the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporations).
Educational opportunity in remote communities is an issue particularly close to his heart, and he seeks an internship with an NGO in the United States in order to gain practical experience working on such issues. Fellowship Placement: Asian Pacific Environmental Network
