Description: Xiaohan Qiu is a first year Master's student studying Social Work at Sun-Yat Sen University in Guangzhou, China. Since 2009, Xiaohan has dedicated her time to a work camp in an isolated village where those diagnosed with the Hansen's disease are recovering. There she supported construction projects, established relationships with the inhabitants, and worked to bring public attention to the disease by organizing a photo exhibition. Xiaohan has made multiple visits to the village on her own time and took the initiative to apply for a grant to get funds for the work camp. Additionally, Xiaohan was trained in conducting interviews and survey ethics to learn about the family dynamics of those living in rural villages as part of the China Family Panel Studies organization. Xiaohan is interning at AIDS Project of East Bay.
